Further education is an exciting and rewarding sector full of opportunities. Though you might immediately think of a teacher when it comes to further education roles, there are in fact a wide variety of jobs suitable for all different skill sets.

If you’re interested in a job in further education, check out this article. We list some of the most exciting roles and how you can get into them.

What are the different types of job in further education

Further education teacher

Further education teachers work with students in post-16 education or with adult learners. You can teach a wide range of subjects, whether they be academic, vocational or leisure subjects.

The route to becoming a further education teacher couldn’t be easier. You can complete online training courses at your own pace and from the comfort of your own home. Check out the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training and the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training with CTC Training.

Education administrator

Education administrators are responsible for the organisation and management of the infrastructure and resources involved in an educational institution. You’ll work in a variety of areas, including admissions, data management and quality assurance.

Careers advisor

The only thing better than landing your dream career is to help others discover theirs. As a careers advisor, you’ll be advising and guiding students to identify suitable career options, build CVs and locate relevant courses and training opportunities.

Counsellor

Counsellors in further education provide help and support to learners, allowing them to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe space. Counselling is a highly rewarding job and can be undertaken in schools, colleges and children’s centres. You will need to earn the relevant qualifications to become a counsellor, depending on which level you work at.

IT Officer

IT officers are responsible for ensuring the organisation’s IT network is fully functional. They provide support to staff to help solve issues and undertake routine administration and maintenance work to keep everything running smoothly.

Further education assessor

Assessors support and encourage students towards a vocational qualification. Assessors will evaluate their students’ competence and offer feedback and guidance to help them achieve the level needed to complete their qualification.

There are three qualifications you can earn to become a qualified assessor. If you wish to assess students in their place of work or a learning environment, we recommend earning the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) with CTC Training.

Marketing officer

Marketing officers promote an institution to prospective students and external partners. They might coordinate events, assist in developing marketing materials or increase brand awareness internationally.

Librarian

Librarians are responsible for the daily running of library services. This can be everything from helping someone find a particular book to managing the cataloguing system.

Quality assurer

A quality assurer is responsible for making sure that the assessments within an organisation are conducted fairly.

You can become a qualified IQA by earning the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice. You may then wish to progress onto the Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice, where you will be responsible for your very own team of IQAs.

Adult education tutor

Further education may include supporting adults by delivering a variety of community learning classes and accredited qualifications.
