Which Qualifications Do I Need?

There are no universal requirements for becoming a trainer or assessor in the UK; each organisation will set its own requirements.

However, most trainer and assessor roles require two things: occupational competence and the appropriate assessor qualifications.

Occupational competence refers to proven ability and experience working in the occupation for which you wish to train and assess learners in.

You will also be expected to either have or work towards an appropriate qualification.

For assessing, the most highly regarded qualification is the Level 3 Certificate in Asses s ing Vocational Achievement (RQF). However, there are a total of four RQF qualifications that can help you towards becoming an assessor. These are:

What Is The Level 3 Award In Understanding The Principles And Practices Of Assessment (RQF)?

The purpose of this qualification is to develop knowledge of the principles and practices of assessment without any requirement to practice as an assessor.

It takes approximately 30 hours to earn this qualification.

What Is The Level 3 Award In Assessing Competence In The Work Environment (RQF)?

This qualification is intended for assessors who assess occupational competence in an individual’s work environment.

It takes approximately 90 hours to earn this qualification.

What Is The Level 3 Award In Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (RQF)?

This qualification is intended for those who assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in a workshop, classroom or other training environment rather than assessing competence in a work environment.

It takes approximately 90 hours to earn this qualification.

What Is The Level 3 Certificate In Assessing Vocational Achievement (RQF)?

Unlike other qualifications which only qualify you to assess learners in a learning environment, the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (RQF) will also qualify you to assess their occupational competence in the workplace. Successful learners will be able to evaluate vocational competencies for a range of qualifications, including apprenticeships, functional skills, teaching certificates, NVQs, awards, certificates and diplomas.

This qualification is comprised of three mandatory units:

Unit 1 — Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
Unit 2 — Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
Unit 3 — Assess occupational competence in the work environment

Training Qualifications

For training, you should hold the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) – PTLLS.

This is the perfect foundation for anyone seeking to become a trainer in the workplace. It is designed to be an introductory qualification to the adult education sector, and will teach you the basic skills and knowledge required to become a competent trainer.
This qualification is comprised of three mandatory units:

Unit 1 — Understanding the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
Unit 2 — Understanding and using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training
Unit 3 — Understanding the principles and practices of assessment

It takes approximately 120 hours to earn this qualification.

What Are The Responsibilities Of A Trainer And Assessor?

Responsibilities may vary depending on the organisation and industry you are working in. General responsibilities include:

Observing candidates’ competency in their workplace
Examining candidates’ portfolios of evidence
Questioning candidates about how they would deal with non-standard situations
Providing feedback and offer advice if the standards are not met
Attending standardisation meetings with other assessors
Working closely with training staff and candidates’ line managers.
