There are various roles and bodies involved in the process of earning qualifications. Assessors are there to assess learners and ensure they meet the required standards. Quality assurers make sure the assessments are conducted fairly.

But who issues the certificates?

We’ll answer that question in this article. Find out everything you need to know about the certificate issuance process.

What qualifications do I need in order to issue certificates

Do assessors issue certificates?

Assessors play an important role in helping learners earn their qualifications. As they’re the person most involved with recording a learner’s progress, it makes sense to think it would be assessors who issue the certificates.

However, assessors do not issue certificates. Once assessors recognise that one of their learners has met all the criteria for the qualification, they send the learner’s portfolio over to the Internal Quality Assurer.

Do IQAs issue certificates?

Internal Quality Assurers are responsible for ensuring that all assessments with an organisation are conducted fairly. When they receive the portfolio of evidence from the assessor, the IQA quality checks the portfolio to make sure the assessment decisions are correct and fair. They would also check that all the required evidence is present.

However, Internal Quality Assurers do not issue certificates. Once they are happy that the assessments have been conducted fairly and the portfolio is complete, they will put in a claim for a certificate with the awarding body.

Do awarding bodies issue certificates?

Yes! The awarding body is responsible for issuing a certificate. But who is the awarding body? Awarding bodies are just as the name suggests: organisations that award individuals following completion of a course.

However, you do not need any qualifications to issue certificates. Any organisation can issue certificates, which is why you always want to ensure that the award you earn is regulated by one of the public regulators governing qualifications in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This includes OFQUAL, SQA, Qualifications Wales and CCEA. Only then can you be sure that you are receiving a high-quality certificate that will be recognised by employers across the UK.

Why should I issue regulated certificates?

  • Offering valuable certificates will incentivise learners to complete the course
  • A regulated certificate will demonstrate the legitimacy of your course
  • Advertising your certificates as regulated and valuable is a great marketing strategy that will help gain more customers
  • It legitimises your teaching method, demonstrating that you are an expert in your field

CTC Training always uses awarding bodies that are regulated by OFQUAL, the regulator of qualifications, examinations and assessments in England. Any qualification you earn from CTC Training will come bearing the OFQUAL logo —a recognised quality mark. If you want to issue certificates yourself, it’s important you get regulated by a public regulator to ensure that your certificates offer value to your learners.
