Further Education Career Progression-01 (1) (1)

Becoming a teacher or trainer in further education can start with a single qualification and grow into a distinguished career. In addition to many of the rewarding challenges and responsibilities afforded to a further education teacher, you’ll also have the opportunity to progress into new roles, adopt new skills and increase your salary. And you can start it all by earning qualifications from your own home.

This guide will explore the journey to becoming a further education teacher/trainer, and the progression options available after securing the role.

Becoming a teacher in further education

There are a range of qualifications available for becoming a teacher in further education. The level of qualification you earn will determine the opportunities available for you. Most learners start with the most basic qualification and advance onto the higher courses as their career progresses.

You can find these teaching qualifications on online training platforms such as CTC Training. The qualifications you earn will enhance your knowledge and skills and demonstrate your ability to an employer.

Most learners start their career with the foundational course:

Level 3 Award in Education and Training (PTLLS)

A foundation award, the AET is designed for learners with no prior experience of training or teaching. It is designed to be an introductory qualification to the adult education sector, giving you a beginner’s look into teaching and what it involves.

This will be your first step towards becoming a teacher/trainer/tutor in the further education and skills sector.

Applying for jobs

Once you have some relevant qualifications, you’ll want to be on the lookout for suitable jobs.

There are a variety of places you can find jobs in the further education and skills sector. These include:

  • Online job sites
  • Company websites
  • Social networks
  • Discussion forums
  • Recruitment agencies
  • Print advertisements

Progression in the role

Working as a teacher or trainer in the further education and skills sector gives you the opportunity to progress into new and more advanced roles.

In many cases, this will require you to earn more advanced teaching qualifications, such as:

Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CTLLS)

You’ll need to already be in a teaching position to earn the Level 4 CET, as you will need to demonstrate 30 hours of teaching practice to complete the course.

Once you’ve achieved this qualification, you’ll expand your opportunities for teaching. You’ll be qualified to deliver teaching/training in limited settings.

You may also wish to progress onto the most advanced teaching course:

Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DTLLS)

The Level 5 DET teaches you a wide range of useful skills that will help you to thrive in a teaching position. You’ll be taught to deliver learning sessions, plan schemes of work and develop teaching and learning strategies.

The Level 5 DET will qualify you to teach in adult, community or work-based training. It also allows you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS).

QTLS

Once you’ve earned your Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET), you can apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS). QTLS has the same legal status as QTS and allows you to teach in schools. You’ll also be able to move between schools and adult education later in your career.

Expected further education teaching salaries

Further education teachers can earn between £24,000-£40,000 annually.

Salaries may vary depending on your level and where you are teaching.
