Assessor Career Progression infographic

Becoming an assessor is a rewarding role that sees you support and guide learners through their vocational qualifications. Assessors are sought after in almost every industry and offer the opportunity to progress into more advanced roles. In this article, we take a look at the assessor role in more detail and explore how becoming an assessor can open up many new doors in your career.

What does an assessor do?

The role of an assessor is to observe, support and guide learners through their vocational qualifications. Assessors must collect evidence to review the abilities of their students and ensure that they are at the level required to pass their course and earn their qualifications.

The responsibilities of an assessor include:

  • Observing and assessing candidates, either in a learning environment or in the workplace
  • Interviewing candidates
  • Examining the portfolios of candidates
  • Providing feedback and advice
  • Keeping record of candidates’ progress
  • Attending meetings with other assessors
  • Evaluating when all requirements are met

Assessors may assess learners doing a variety of qualifications, including:

  • Apprenticeships
  • Awards
  • Certificates
  • Diplomas
  • Functional Skills
  • NVQs
  • Technical Skills

What qualifications do I need to become an assessor?

There are three main qualifications to becoming an assessor, these are:

The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (CAVA) is the most popular of three qualifications because it gives assessors the greatest scope to assess. Unlike the other two qualifications, the CAVA allows you to assess learners both in a learning environment and in the workplace.

What are the different assessor roles?

There are various assessor roles, each with their own responsibilities and salaries. As an assessor, you can gain experience on the job and progress into different roles. These include:

  • Work-Based Tutor – £18k-25k
  • Training Officer – £23k
  • Apprenticeship Training and Quality Manager – Competitive
  • Distance Learning Assessor – £27k
  • Curriculum Manager – £30k-40k

Progression through the role

You can progress through the various assessor roles by gaining experience and taking additional training.  You may also take on extra responsibilities within your role, including leading an assessor team.

That’s right — some assessors progress to assessing the assessors themselves!
