Are you considering a career in education but feeling overwhelmed by the various qualifications available? You’re not alone. Two popular options that often cause confusion are the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) and the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (DIT). While these qualifications may sound similar, they have some key differences that are worth exploring.
But before we drill down to the nuts and bolts, it’s important to note that the education sector is undergoing significant changes. As of September 2024, the DET is being replaced by the DIT, officially known as the Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills).
Key differences in units
One of the most noticeable differences between the DET and DIT is their unit structure. The DIT has been designed to align more closely with what employers are looking for in trainee teachers.
Some of the key units in the DIT include:
- Learners and Learning
- Teachers and Teaching
- Teaching My Subject
- Professional Practice
- Digital and Online Pedagogies
- Action Research
- Coaching and Mentoring
- Managing Behaviour
These units have been carefully chosen to provide a comprehensive foundation for aspiring teachers, covering everything from understanding learners to managing classroom behaviour.
What can you do with the qualifications?
Upon completion of the DIT, you’ll be eligible to apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) status, which is equivalent to QTS. You’ll need to meet the entry requirements as outlined in the guidance from the Society for Education and Training (SET).
With either qualification, you can teach in further education colleges, adult education centres and a variety of other settings. However, the DIT’s focus on digital and online pedagogies may better prepare you for the increasing demand for remote and blended learning.
Time to complete
Both the DET and DIT typically take 12 months to complete when studied part-time. The DIT has 1200 hours total qualification time, including:
- Approx. 395 guided learning hours
- Approx. 805 hours of self-directed learning
- A minimum of 250 hours in a teaching placement, with at least 150 hours dedicated to hands-on teaching practice.
Practical training and evidence
The DIT places a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on training.
- You’ll need to complete 10 observations
- Each observation must be approximately 45 minutes long
This is a significant increase from the DET requirements and ensures that you’re well-prepared for real-world teaching scenarios.
Number of assignments
While the exact number of assignments can vary, the DIT typically requires:
- Multiple written assignments covering each unit
- A portfolio of evidence, including a reflective diary, CPD log and schemes of learning
- A final professional discussion to showcase your knowledge
The DET generally has fewer assignments, but the increased number in the DIT allows for a more comprehensive assessment of your skills and knowledge.
Entry requirements
It’s worth noting that the entry requirements for the DIT have been slightly adjusted:
- You’ll need a Level 2 Qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
- The ‘minimum core’ component has been removed
- You’ll need a subject-specific qualification at level 3 or higher
- GCSEs or equivalent in English Language and Maths at grade 4/C or above are required
Is the DIT right for you?
If you’re passionate about teaching and want a qualification that prepares you for the modern day, the DIT could be an excellent choice. Its focus on practical experience, digital skills and industry standards makes it a robust foundation for a teaching career.
