If you’ve done any research into assessor qualifications, you’ve probably come across the terms ‘A1 Assessor’ and ‘CAVA’. These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but are they the same thing?
The answer is yes… but also no.
The A1 Assessor qualification no longer exists, and has since been replaced with a suite of qualifications, known as TAQA. Of these courses, the most popular is the CAVA qualification. If you wish to take an assessor course that enables you to assess in both a workplace and learning environment, you’ll need to enrol on the CAVA.
In this article, we take a closer look at the CAVA qualification, including the changes made when it evolved from the A1 Assessor qualification and why you should consider enrolling if you wish to become an assessor.
Understanding the CAVA qualification
Among the new suite of assessor qualifications is the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA), which is not only the most popular but also the most similar to the A1 assessor qualification. Like the A1 Assessor course, the CAVA provides the knowledge and skills required to assess learners both at their workplace and in a learning environment such as a classroom.
What is the difference between the CAVA and the A1?
The CAVA and A1 are mostly the same qualification, but some changes have been made to refresh and modernise the content.
Some of these changes include:
- Updated assessment methods
The CAVA introduced a broader range of assessment methods to reflect the diverse ways people learn and work in today’s world. Assessors can tailor their approach to individual learners’ needs, ensuring a more effective and engaging assessment experience.
- Greater emphasis on reflective practice
The CAVA encourages assessors to engage in something known as ‘reflective practice’, which encourages continuous professional development and improvement. This focus on self-assessment and growth ensures that assessors stay up to date with industry standards and best practice.
