Starting a beauty academy may seem daunting, but with the right plans, qualifications and premises, you’ll be training new beauticians in no time. In this article, we’ve put together a list of all the things you’ll need to start your very own beauty academy.
Location
If you’re going to set up a beauty academy you’re going to need a physical location. You’ll want to make sure it is large enough to accommodate your maximum class size as well as any equipment that might be needed.
The premises you choose will reflect back on your business, so you’ll want to make sure the space is clean and professional. Remember to also choose somewhere that is accessible so that people of all abilities have the opportunity to train as beauticians.
Qualifications
There are two types of qualifications you’ll need to teach and train at a beauty academy.
Firstly, you’ll need beauty qualifications. No one will learn from you if you haven’t first demonstrated that you know what you’re talking about.
You’ll need to be adequately qualified in all the subjects you plan to teach. In some cases, you might need at least six months’ experience in a subject before you can become accredited.
You’ll also need teacher/training qualifications if you wish to teach. For this you’ll need the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET).
A foundation award, the AET is designed for learners with no prior experience of training or teaching. It is designed to be an introductory qualification to the adult education sector, giving you a beginner’s look into teaching and what it involves.
By earning this qualification you will have learnt the fundamentals of teaching/training and will be able to teach your own beauty class unsupervised.
There are three units within this course:
UNIT NO: 1 — Understanding the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
UNIT NO: 2 — Understanding and using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training
UNIT NO: 3 — Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
You can earn the Level 3 Award in Education and Training from the comfort of your own home with CTC Training.
Create the course structure
Without course structure you have no course. It’s vital you plan and develop the theory and practical elements of the course to ensure you cover all aspects.
And just as important as the content are the assignments. You will need to assess your students on their knowledge and their practical skills to ensure they reach the benchmark for becoming a professional. It is your responsibility to decide on a minimum pass mark.
Insurance
It’s important to take out teaching insurance before you hold your first class, especially considering you will be using a range of equipment. Teaching insurance is available from most beauty insurance companies. If you plan on employing staff to help you run your academy, you will also need to hold Employers Liability cover.
