We all need advice and guidance at some point in our lives, whether from a careers advisor, a support worker or a counsellor. And how much better that advice is when it’s delivered by someone who’s learned how to support their clients in a clear and effective way.
If you’re looking to develop a role in information, advice and guidance (IAG), you’ll find that the right qualifications can go a long way towards creating a path into a rewarding and enjoyable career. But what sort of qualifications are available and how do you go about getting them?
What IAG qualifications are there?
Two of the most useful courses for those looking to develop a career in information, advice and guidance are:
The Level 3 Certificate in Advice and Guidance (RQF) – This course is aimed at those who are already in an advice and guidance role, but are looking to back this up by improving their skills and gaining a recognised qualification.
The Level 4 Diploma in Advice and Guidance (RQF) – This is a more advanced course for those with more extensive IAG experience who want to take their careers to a higher level and deliver even more effective support to their clients.
How do I get an IAG qualification?
Neither of the above courses have any specific entry requirements, but the Level 4 Diploma in particular is more suited to those with reasonable experience in the field.
You can get your IAG qualification by enrolling for an online course from CTC Training. Because our courses are fully online, they allow you to fit your studies around your existing commitments. You also have up to twelve months to complete each course, meaning you can work entirely at your own pace. Throughout the duration of your studies, you’ll also benefit from the unlimited support of a personal tutor.
And at the end, you get a nationally recognised qualification, regulated by Ofqual.
What will I learn on an IAG course?
Our information, advice and guidance courses will provide both essential knowledge and practical experience.
The Level 3 Certificate in Advice and Guidance includes units on: establishing communication with clients; understanding the importance of legislation and procedures; and developing interactions with advice and guidance clients. It has an approximate study time of 132 hours.
The more advanced Level 4 Diploma in Advice and Guidance includes areas like: managing caseloads; evaluating and developing your contribution to the service; operating within networks; and providing support for other practitioners. It has an approximate study time of 213 hours.
What roles can I get with an IAG qualification?
Because they develop skills in areas such as communication, interviewing, case management and providing information to clients, there are many roles and sectors that would be eminently suitable for someone with our IAG qualifications. These include:
- Education
- Welfare
- Youth work
- Training advice and assessment
- Citizens Advice
- Prison and Probation Service
- Children’s homes
- Information officers
- Financial advice
- Recruitment
- Trade union representative
