What is a vocational assessor?
A vocational assessor is someone who assesses people working towards vocational qualifications – whether in a learning or workplace setting – to ensure they are meeting the necessary standards to succeed.
This can be done as a job in itself or to enable you to assess competency in your own workplace. It will equip you to assess competency in a wide range of scenarios, from apprenticeships and diplomas to NVQs and technical skills.
What qualifications do you need to become a vocational assessor?

- The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement
- The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
There are no specific entry requirements for these courses, other than a minimum level 2 in English and maths – and an enthusiasm to support and help other people.

What units do these courses include?
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement has two units:
- UNIT NO 1 – Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
- UNIT NO 2 – Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement comprises three units:
- UNIT NO 1 – Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
- UNIT NO 2 – Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment
- UNIT NO 3 – Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
Assessment is by internally set and marked assignments that are subject to external quality assurance.
How long do these courses take?
Both courses are to be completed within twelve months of enrolment, although most people will complete them within one to three months. The Level 3 Award has a study period of approximately 90 hours, while the Level 3 Certificate has a study period of approximately 150 hours.
