The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is the most comprehensive assessor qualification, providing holders with the knowledge and skills required to assess learners both at their workplace and in a learning environment such as a classroom. There is an approximate study period of 150 hours to earn the qualification.

What is involved in completing the CAVA qualification? 

Throughout the approximately 150 hours it takes to complete the CAVA course, you’ll need to complete 3 mandatory units. These are:

UNIT NO:1 –  Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

This fundamental unit will help you to understand the principles and requirements of assessment, the different types of assessment methods, how to plan an assessment and much more.

UNIT NO:2 –  Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding

This unit teaches you specifically about assessing vocational skills. You’ll learn how to plan and carry out the assessments of vocational skills, be able to provide required information following the assessment of vocational skills and be able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing occupational vocational skills.

UNIT NO:3 –  Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment

This unit teaches you specifically about occupational competence. You’ll learn how to plan the assessments of occupational competence, be able to make assessment decisions and be able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing occupational competence.

The qualification is assessed by internally set and marked assessments subject to external quality assurance. There must be evidence to cover all of the assessment methods listed in the units.

What to be aware of before starting the CAVA

You must satisfy the following entry requirements to enrol on the CAVA course:

  • Aged 19 and above
  • Have adequate reading and communication skills
  • Not have a criminal background that prevents you from working with young people or vulnerable adults
  • Hold a relevant qualification at a level above that of your learners; ideally at least Level 3 in their area of specialism
  • Have a basic grasp of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT
