With the Level 3 AET, you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to teach in the post-16 education sector. If you are qualified in the subject you wish to teach and have earned the Level 3 AET, you’ll be able to teach at a nationally accredited standard.
However, it’s important to note that the Level 3 AET only qualifies you to teach adults in particular sectors. To teach in schools, you will need to progress further and earn more advanced qualifications.
In this article, we take a look at what you can do with a Level 3 Award in Education and Training, including the sectors you can work in and the route you can take to working as a teacher in a school.
What is the Level 3 Award in Education and Training?
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is your first step towards becoming a qualified teacher/trainer. As a foundation course, the AET will equip you with the essential skills and knowledge you need as a teacher.
The Award in Education and Training is the first of three teaching qualifications and most learners earn the AET before moving on to more advanced courses.
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is composed of three units:
UNIT NO: 1 — Understanding the Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training.
UNIT NO: 2 — Understanding and using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training.
UNIT NO: 3 — Understanding the principles and practices of assessment.
What sectors can I teach in?
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training allows you to teach over 16s in a wide range of sectors, including:
- Health industry
- Beauty industry
- Care homes
- Special needs education
- Emergency services
- Care sector
- First aid
- And much more
Routes of progression
Above the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) are two further qualifications:
This qualification is usually used as a springboard toward the Level5 diploma. However, if you don’t wish to take the Level5 course, a CET qualification is enough to deliver teaching/training in a range of settings.
The Diploma in Teaching (DIT) provides you with all the skills you need to become a teacher in post-16 education. It also allows you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.
Notably, if you wish to teach in schools, you can earn the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching and then apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. QTLS is equivalent to QTS and will allow you to teach pupils in schools across the country.
