It’s easy to get confused by the various assessor acronyms floating around online. ACWE, AVRA, UPPA and CAVA may all look similar, but they all represent different qualifications — and it’s important to understand which is which.

By the end of this article, you’ll know about each of the four assessor qualifications, including what they are, what they are needed for and which one is right for you.

ACWE, AVRA, UPPA & CAVA - What Do I Need to Become an Assessor?

What is the ACWE qualification?

ACWE stands for Assessing Competence in the Work Environment. This is a level 3 assessor qualification that focuses on assessing occupational competence in a work environment. To complete this course and earn the qualification, you will be required to assess the occupational competence of two learners.

What does the course involve?

The course is made up of two units:

UNIT NO:1 –  Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

This fundamental unit will help you to understand the principles and requirements of assessment, the different types of assessment methods, how to plan an assessment and much more.

UNIT NO:2 –  Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment

This unit teaches you specifically about occupational competence. You’ll learn how to plan the assessments of occupational competence, be able to make assessment decisions and be able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing occupational competence.

What does this qualification allow me to do?

This qualification allows you to assess learners in their place of work but not in a learning environment.

What are the entry requirements for this course?

If you wish to enrol on this course, you’ll need to have a minimum of level 2 in literacy or numeracy or equivalent and be at least 18 years old.

What is the cost of this course?

£299 inc. VAT — or £59.80 inc. VAT per month paid over 5 months

What is the AVRA qualification?

AVRA stands for Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement. This is a level 3 assessor qualification that focuses on assessing competence in a learning environment. To complete this course and earn the qualification, you will be required to assess thecompetence of two learners.

What does the course involve?

The course is made up of two units:

UNIT NO:1 –  Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

CAVA stands for Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement. This is a level 3 assessor qualification that enables you to assess learners in a learning environment and a place of work. To complete this course and earn the qualification, you will be required to assess the occupational competence of two learners.

What does the course involve?

The course is made up of three units:

UNIT NO:1 –  Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

What is the UPPA qualification?

UPPA stands for Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment. This is a level 3 assessor qualification for anyone looking to gain a background understanding of the assessment role and the practices within it. There is no requirement to be in an assessment role to earn this qualification – the entirety of the course can be completed online.

The course is made up of three units:
