As a manager, business owner, or facilities manager, you are responsible for the safety and well-being of your employees.

Workplace safety comes in many forms, one of which is the provision of first aid. In the UK, first aid at work is legally required regardless of industry. In this article, we discuss the UK laws regarding first aid at work.

Read on to discover what is required of you, and how you can train your employees to ensure your business is compliant with the law.

What are the requirements for first aid at work?

UK Laws for First Aid at Work

The UK Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide their workers with suitable equipment and training so proper action can be taken if someone falls ill or gets injured at work. While there is no specific number of first aiders required, you will need to determine an ‘adequate’ number based on the size and nature of your business.

You can establish your business’ first aid requirements by considering the number of employees you have, any workplace hazards and past history of accidents. This assessment will help you determine the number of first aiders needed and the type of training they should receive.

Once you’ve established what you need, it’s time to train your staff. There are two key first aid courses for businesses – Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF) and Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF).

Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)

Need an emergency first aid course, but only have a day to spare? Then look no further than the Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF). This quick but thorough course is designed for smaller workplaces with lower risk.

This one-day course is ideal for nominated workplace first aiders and employees who want an introduction to emergency first aid. The course covers essential first aid skills, including CPR, managing unresponsive casualties, dealing with choking and controlling bleeding.

After their day of training, successful learners will receive a Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work, valid for three years. We also recommend they attend an annual refresher course to keep their skills up to date.

Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF)

For larger businesses or those with a higher level of risk, the Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) is a more comprehensive option. This three-day course covers a wider range of first aid scenarios and techniques, including managing fractures, burns and seizures.

The Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) is valid for three years, and, again, we recommend that learners attend an annual refresher course to maintain their skills.

Both first aid courses can be completed with CTC Training. Book up to 12 participants and choose to do the training at your own venue or our dedicated training facility. Whichever option you choose, your staff will receive first-class training led by an experienced instructor. They will receive a combination of classroom learning and practical training, giving them the skills they need to provide first aid in your workplace.
