Becoming a hair assessor is a natural path of progression for any hairdresser. With your support, guidance and assessing skills, you’ll be helping trainee hairdressers achieve their qualifications and establish themselves in their dream role.

How to become a hair assessor

What does a hair assessor do?

No, you won’t be assessing the quality of someone’s hair. A hair assessor doesn’t assess hair so much as they assess learners.

A hair assessor will be conducting the assessments of learners aiming to become qualified hairdressers. The role will involve observing, supporting and guiding learners through their qualification. The assessor must collect evidence from their learners to assess their ability and ensure they reach the level required to pass their course.

Just some of the responsibilities of a hair assessor include:

  • Observing students’ competency in the workplace
  • Examining students’ portfolio of evidence
  • Providing feedback and advice to students
  • Attending standardisation meetings with other assessors
  • Planning and delivering training and workshops
  • Questioning students about how they would deal with non-standard situations
  • Signing off awards when all requirements have been met
  • Keeping records of their students’ progress

What qualities do you need to become a successful hair assessor?

You will need to have previous experience in hairdressing to become a hair assessor, making the role ideal for any current hairdressers looking to make a change in their career without leaving the industry entirely.

A successful hair assessor will also need to be:

  • Patient
  • Approachable
  • Motivational
